Form knurling tools work by pushing the knurling wheel against the piece and deforming it: the raw material flows along its sides and fills the cavities up.
This is a cold plastic deformation and it is characteris ed by work hardening, of the material. Metal hardens if exposed to efforts which overcome its intrinsic strength limit. On atomic level this is caused by the dislocation movement of crystalline grid, where the crystalline levels slide one over the other and are hindered by impurities and grain boundaries. After form knurling the product will show a higher hardness, endurance and a lower lengthening percentage.
